But first, good bye to New Zealand. We were woken up in our hostel this morning at an ungodly hour by the volunteer fire alarm, which was half a block from where we were staying. I got back to sleep for awhile. Then we got packed up and checked out. We walked downtown and found a place to grab some breakfast. It tasted amazing to have a hot breakfast for once instead of fruit and cereal bars. I had pancakes with fruit.
Then we walked around for a bit trying to find something to do. We talked about renting kayaks to take onto the lake but it was a bit expensive and it looked like it could rain at any minute so we decided against it. Instead, we decided to take advantage of New Zealand's legal open container laws. We bought a Speight's beer from a liquor store and we took it to the park and sat by the water to drink it. So that's how we said goodbye to NZ.
Then we made our way to the airport, returned our rental car and got through security. We found the international lounge and chilled there for a bit eating the yummy food and using the fast wifi. Hopped on our flight where we watched a couple of movies and ate some food, then finally arrived in Melbourne!
We got a cab to our airbnb and got settled in. We'll be here for four whole nights; a new record! It's an apartment pretty centrally located. It's a really nice building and there's a park right across the street.

Then we headed off to explore. We grabbed the (free!) tram that's right outside our door. We took that down to King Street and walked along it to the river. There's just a ton of things going on so it took us awhile to finally decide on a restaurant. We decided on Insignia where I was able to get a small pizza and a flight of four beers for only $10 Australian dollars.
After dinner we walked back to our place. I don't think I realized how big of a city Melbourne is. There's so much going on and so many people out! There's theaters, bars, food, street performers; everything you can imagine. I guess I haven't spent much time in big cities before. I just checked the population versus the population of Kansas City and according to google it's over twice the size (5.2 mil vs 2.3 mil). So even though I'm really tired tonight I'm very excited to explore more of the city.
Another fact that blew my mind before coming to Australia- it's about the same size as the continental US. Isn't that crazy?! There's so much to see and do here, no wonder it was difficult to try to decide which areas we were going to do in our three weeks here. Can you imagine trying to experience the entire US in three weeks?
Anyway, I'm headed to bed. Night all, and happy Friday!
