Walking Stockholm- from the Highest High to the Narrowest Street

Today was a busy day for us with lots of walking. We started by taking the metro to Fjällgatan for a nice view over the water. It's one of the best views in Stockholm as you can see the Gamla Stan, the island of Skeppsholmen, and the island of Djurgården.

From there we walked to Söderhallarna market which was a pretty typical inside market with fresh fish and produce as well as some baked goods. We didn't need to stay there long and then we proceeded to Skinnarviksberget which is the highest natural point in Stockholm. We could see everything up there, and based on the broken bottles on the ground it's obvious that it's a local favorite for parties and hangouts.

Then we walked along Monteliusvägen which is a walking path a quarter mile long. It's lined with beautiful houses on one side and a great view of Lake Mälaren, City Hall, and Riddarholmen on the other.

That took us pretty much right up to a bridge that lead us onto Gamla Stan Island, which is referred to as Old Town. It dates back to the 17th century and is full of tiny narrow alleyways (including Mårten Trotzigs Gränd- Stockholm's most narrow street), cobbled streets, and archaic architecture. We saw the restaurant Den gyldene freden, which is in the Guinness Book of records as the oldest existing restaurant with an unaltered interior. We ate lunch in Jarntorget plaza (which was a complete ripoff- we realized when the bill came we were charged like $9 for a bottle of water!). There were a ton of adorable places to eat in Old Town so no need to rush into the first place you see like we did. After lunch we also walked to Stockholm's oldest square, Stortorget, which is also located in Old Town. We also saw the beautiful Storkyrkan cathedral and the Royal Palace, called Kungliga Slottet.

That pretty much concluded our day. We walked back to Centralen and took the metro back home. We were lucky that the weather shaped up for us today, as we expected it to be rainy but we never saw a drop! I was also super excited to find lots of lilacs around the city today. I absolutely love lilacs and I somehow always manage to miss them blooming, even when I'm back in the states, and I figured this year wouldn't be an exception. But they are in full bloom here!
